Breaking Bathroom Design Rules: Nate Berkus’ Unconventional Tip

Renowned designer Nate Berkus challenges conventional wisdom with his Small/Cool bathroom design approach. While adhering to the principle of symmetry, Berkus introduces a twist by incorporating varied accessories on each side of the bathtub.

Crafting the Scene

Representing his line, NATE HOME by Nate Berkus, Berkus initiates the design by positioning two full-size shelving units flanking the bathtub, fostering a serene ambiance in a space dedicated to relaxation. Opting for wooden Urban Outfitters cabinets with glass doors, Berkus ensures essentials like towels and products remain discreet yet accessible. To enhance the focal point, he selects a vintage-inspired gold-trim rectangular mirror, strategically placed behind the freestanding tub.

Breaking Symmetry

Departing from strict symmetry, Berkus introduces diverse accessories to disrupt visual equilibrium while maintaining intrigue. On one side of the tub, a small Colin King for West Elm acacia wood stool adorned with washcloths and a plant imparts warmth. Conversely, a beige bench occupies the opposite side, serving as a multifunctional platform for flowers, towels, or bath essentials, seamlessly blending functionality with design aesthetics. Berkus completes the ensemble with luxurious white bath linens from his NATE HOME line, elevating the space with crisp elegance.

Embracing Eclecticism

Berkus advocates for blending old and new elements to cultivate a layered and refined aesthetic. In the Small/Cool NYC space, he revitalizes a classic check pattern with vertical grasscloth wallpaper, infusing modern geometric pieces like arched cabinets and round sconces with vintage-inspired accents such as the mirror and chair. The result is a captivating space that defies expectations, brimming with character and allure.

Implementing the Tip

For those inspired to deviate from traditional symmetry, Berkus recommends pairing two similar items, such as a wooden stool and a lighter-tone bench, to achieve visual interest while preserving cohesion in the room’s design.

Nate Berkus’ innovative approach to bathroom decor encourages experimentation and creativity, urging homeowners to embrace individuality and express their unique style through thoughtful design choices.
