Entering Bibhu Mohapatra’s exquisite Tribeca atelier, one is immediately enveloped in an ambiance of creative energy and inspiration. Amidst the rich hues of color boards and a treasure trove of fashion literature, it becomes apparent that Mohapatra’s design process is deeply rooted in his personal memories and experiences. From his formative years in India, where his mother imparted the art of stitching at the tender age of 12, to his illustrious career dressing icons like Michelle Obama and Priyanka Chopra, Mohapatra draws upon a wealth of nostalgia to shape his couture masterpieces. However, it is his cherished recollections of Diwali that hold a special place in his heart.
Celebrating Diwali: A Source of Inspiration
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, serves as a beacon of joy and prosperity, evoking memories of luminous diyas, vibrant fireworks, and cherished moments spent with family. For Mohapatra, Diwali represents more than just a cultural celebration—it is an opportunity to infuse his designs with the spirit of festivity and tradition.
A Bespoke Creation: Weaving Memories into Fabric
When tasked by The Glenlivet to design a bespoke dress for the Diwali Gala, Mohapatra drew upon his childhood memories of fireworks illuminating the night sky. The resulting gown is a testament to his craftsmanship and creativity, meticulously handcrafted with over 500 crystals, 6,000 cup sequins, and 1,000 Japanese bugle beads. Symbolizing the transition from dusk to night, the gown’s fitted bodice in luxurious black velvet gives way to an ethereal silk skirt, adorned with intricate beadwork reminiscent of exploding fireworks.
Embracing Modernity with Tradition
In conceptualizing the dress, Mohapatra sought to intertwine the essence of Diwali with the modern ethos embodied by model and entrepreneur Pritika Swarup, who would debut the gown at the gala. Reflecting on Swarup’s advocacy for conscious beauty through her brand Prakti Beauty, Mohapatra aimed to encapsulate the essence of a modern, empowered woman while honoring age-old traditions.
The Art of Couture: A Labor of Love
The creation of Mohapatra’s masterpiece was a collaborative endeavor, spanning two months and involving skilled artisans in India and expert seamstresses in New York. From the initial sketches to the meticulous embroidery and hand-stitching, every step of the process was imbued with care and craftsmanship.
Empowering Through Design
For Mohapatra, couture is more than just fashion—it is a medium through which one can express confidence and strength. Whether dressing a global icon or a gala attendee, Mohapatra’s ultimate goal is to instill a sense of empowerment in those who wear his creations. As he aptly puts it, “Clothes can be your support system and give you power. Let the design speak to you.”
In Mohapatra’s world, couture is not merely about dressing the body—it is about crafting memories, celebrating tradition, and embracing the spirit of Diwali in every stitch.
