Fishtank Cafe: A Unique Urban Oasis

Nestled within an arena in Nanjing, the Fishtank Cafe by Office AIO transforms a former storage room into a vibrant coffee shop that defies convention. Situated between two overhanging bridges and facing a bustling ring road, the cafe’s unassuming facade belies the immersive experience within. Office AIO saw this nondescript location as an opportunity to reimagine the cafe as a destination rather than just a neighborhood spot, crafting an environment reminiscent of a tranquil fish tank.

Blurring Boundaries with Glass Facades

A defining feature of the Fishtank Cafe is its glass facade, separating the inner sanctuary from the bustling urban surroundings. This transparent barrier allows natural light to filter in, illuminating the space and subtly echoing the grid lines of the arena’s exterior. What once served as a service vent now functions as an “exit door,” seamlessly guiding visitors from the exterior to the interior. A larger rotating door offers occasional glimpses into the cafe, inviting passersby to step inside and explore. Once inside, patrons are greeted by an inviting atmosphere, with a wall-mounted bar beckoning them to linger and socialize.

Natural Elements and Whimsical Design

The interior of the cafe seamlessly blends with its surroundings while offering a distinct sense of tranquility. Orange brick tiles evoke the charm of street pavements, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. A lush plant box adds a touch of greenery, infusing the space with life. The terrazzo floor, adorned with specks of color, complements the soft white palette and provides a calming contrast to the urban chaos outside. The slanted ceiling, finished in warm grey plaster, adds texture and depth, reminiscent of ocean waves.

Crafting Community Spaces

At the heart of the cafe is the bar area, featuring blocks of varying heights and configurations that playfully defy the site’s irregularities. Movable stools encourage interaction between patrons and baristas, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Surrounding the bars is a C-shaped bench made of Corian, inviting patrons to linger and create their own cozy nooks. Bespoke tables in warm oak and pale green acrylic, paired with tan leather stools, further enhance the cafe’s whimsical charm, offering a space where coffee enthusiasts can embark on a journey of discovery within their own realms.

The Fishtank Cafe transcends its humble origins, offering an immersive oasis where urban dwellers can escape the hustle and bustle of city life and indulge in moments of tranquility and connection.
