Chengdu, renowned as one of China’s happiest cities, boasts a unique urban culture characterized by its “slow life” ethos, seamlessly integrated with rapid urban development. This vibrant cityscape fosters a blend of leisurely activities, where street-side tea sipping and outdoor gatherings are integral to daily life. Embracing a 24-hour culture, Chengdu embodies a harmonious coexistence of generations, offering a dynamic and inclusive environment for all.
Integrating Diverse Programs
The HARMAY Chengdu project aimed to unite a diverse range of functions within a single space, comprising a cosmetic store, bakery, and bar. Rather than segregating these programs, our vision was to create a cohesive environment where each element influences and complements the others throughout the day. This approach allows for seamless transitions between activities while offering independent functionality when needed.
Innovative Spatial Design
Central to the design concept is the integration of the store, bakery, and bar within a linear space. A minimalist intervention using industrial factory door units delineates and connects these core areas. These doors, uniform in scale and appearance, serve as movable partitions, facilitating accessibility and visual continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. Simple yet effective, this design promotes fluidity and interaction within the environment.
Utilizing Industrial Elements
Industrial prefabricated elements, such as crates and rack systems, form the backbone of the interior design. These components, inspired by the brand’s warehouse aesthetic, provide a cost-effective and versatile solution for organizing the space. By creatively stacking and repurposing these elements, we crafted various furniture pieces and display structures, enhancing the store’s visual appeal and functionality.
Engaging with the Community
The design prioritizes human connection and interaction, with an emphasis on fostering engagement with the surrounding public plaza. Outdoor seating areas crafted from stacked wooden pallets invite visitors to relax and socialize, reflecting Chengdu’s vibrant outdoor lifestyle. Through this project, we aim to contribute to the city’s cultural landscape while reaffirming the importance of community spaces in urban environments.
