The Fusuma-e House and Office by knof is a testament to innovative spatial design, transforming a conventional condominium into a dynamic one-room unit that seamlessly integrates living and working spaces. Located with panoramic views of the Koto Canal, this 33-year-old condominium underwent a remarkable renovation to cater to the evolving needs of its occupants.
Overlapping Spaces
Rather than segregating living and working areas, the design philosophy centered on overlapping these domains to maximize flexibility and functionality within the limited area of 80 square meters. The result is a single-room layout that loosely transitions from office space to bedroom, accommodating the diverse activities of its inhabitants.
Fusuma-Inspired Design
Inspired by the traditional Japanese art of fusuma-e (sliding door paintings), the interior fittings of the room were conceived as a canvas for artistic expression. Nine consecutive fittings traverse the space, serving as practical doors while also resembling a horizontal screen reminiscent of fusuma paintings.
Augmented Reality of Depth
Drawing parallels to the immersive experience of viewing traditional Japanese barrier paintings, the design aims to evoke a sense of augmented reality within the urban confines of a condominium. Artist Saki Ikeda was commissioned to design the fusuma paintings, with a whale motif chosen to symbolize a scale beyond human living spaces, harmonizing with the adjacent canal views.
Craftsmanship and Materiality
The fusuma paintings, meticulously drawn with a drawing pen, were enlarged and printed directly onto lauan plywood, utilizing a rough grain and color to depict the ocean waves. This thoughtful craftsmanship not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also creates a tactile connection to nature within the interior space.
Dynamic Spatial Experience
The relationship between the canal outside and the whale in the paintings mirrors the Zen concept of the garden and fusuma paintings in traditional Japanese architecture, inviting residents to navigate between reality and imagination. The replaceable canvas of the fusuma fittings allows for the customization of space, enabling occupants to alter the ambiance and depth of the room according to their preferences.
