Revitalizing Tradition: Guculska Apartment by replus design bureau

Guculska Apartment, a project by replus design bureau, beautifully marries traditional Hutsulian ethnic style with the neo-renaissance Austrian environment. Situated in the heart of Lviv on Hutsulska Street, the project involved refurbishing and redesigning an old apartment within a historical building dating back to 1892-1896. The goal was to preserve authentic elements while infusing modern ethnic touches, creating a space that seamlessly blends the past with the present.

Contextual Challenges and Solutions

Challenges arose due to the apartment’s narrow and elongated layout. To create a sense of spaciousness, mirrors and strategic furniture placement were employed. Extensive restoration work was undertaken, including the removal of cracked ceilings and the reinforcement of old wooden beams discovered above. Underfloor heating and natural marble tiles were incorporated to enhance comfort and aesthetics.

Preservation of Authentic Elements

Special care was taken to preserve authentic features such as late 19th-century doors, vintage wardrobes, and a historical stove from the Levynskyi factory, which was transformed into a classic open fireplace. Frescos, wooden beams, and original window fittings were meticulously restored, maintaining the apartment’s historical character and charm.

Fostering Community and Comfort

The design aimed to evoke the ambiance of Lviv’s historical center while fostering a sense of community. Windows facing the courtyard were replaced with large aluminum frames to facilitate interaction among neighbors. A multifunctional kitchen table and open walnut cabinets were designed for convenience, while the bathroom prioritized functionality and natural light.

Thoughtful Details and Family Heritage

Unique touches such as a bathtub in the bedroom and wooden beams sourced from an old Hutsul house add character and depth to the space. Engraved inscriptions on the beams connect the apartment to the owner’s family history, creating a meaningful link between past and present generations.

Conclusion: A Harmonious Fusion of Past and Present

Guculska Apartment exemplifies replus design bureau’s commitment to honoring tradition while embracing contemporary design principles. By preserving authentic elements and integrating modern ethnic touches, the project pays homage to Lviv’s rich architectural heritage while providing a comfortable and inviting living space for its occupants.
