The Center for Artistic Residencies (CRA), conceptualized by BURR Studio, aims to temporarily repurpose a warehouse at Matadero Madrid into a dynamic hub for artists in residence.
Spatial Concept
The spatial design of CRA encompasses a range of support structures tailored to cater to the diverse needs of resident artists. These structures facilitate gatherings, private work, storage, workshops, and other essential functions within the warehouse setting.
User-Centric Approach
Inspired by Celine Condorelli’s Support Structure Manifesto, the intervention prioritizes the user experience. The design comprises elements operating at various scales, including closed storage units with one side covered by stretched tarpaulins. These units, configured in the shape of “+,” “T,” and “L,” create individual quadrants for resident artists, offering privacy, focused lighting, and dedicated workspaces.
Functional Layout
The arrangement of these elements within the warehouse fosters individual privacy while also establishing a communal space shielded from external gaze. Additionally, a semicircular aluminum structure on wheels, equipped with a large curtain, serves as a versatile backdrop for presentations or meetings. Separate storage and workshop areas are delineated by a textile barrier, ensuring clear demarcation of spaces.
Temporary Aesthetic
The structures are designed to maintain a neutral and uniform appearance, allowing them to seamlessly integrate into the artistic environment without overshadowing the creative process. Embracing a deliberately temporary aesthetic, these elements position themselves as facilitators of the space and its users, embodying functionality and adaptability.
Conclusion
CRA (Center for Artistic Residencies) by BURR Studio represents a thoughtful approach to transforming industrial spaces into vibrant artistic hubs. By prioritizing user needs, fostering privacy, and embracing a temporary aesthetic, the design creates an environment conducive to artistic exploration and collaboration within the unique context of Matadero Madrid.
